WHAT WAS |
Not to be confused with the Cox Station up near Pyramid Lake. Sometimes referred to as "Old Cox Station," but I don't know if that's referring to Cox himself or the station. Nobody really knows where this place used to be. Various places give slightly different coordinates. The 1882 Wheeler map shows its location, generally. It lies in Diamond Field Jack Wash, off the established Wadsworth/ Columbus Freight Route, which heads up Four Mile Canyon to the east. The wash was named after Jack "Diamond Field" Davis, supposedly a notorious gun slinger and mine promoter. He operated in Nevada and had some interests in the area. However, that road could have been a short cut or alternate route on the W/CFR. A 1908 USGS map doesn't even show a road passing by any more. Later maps show a pipeline.
